DC registers first win | Warner leads the way

Delhi Capitals won their first game in IPL 2023. David Warner led his side to a 4-wicket win in a low-scoring encounter that went down the wire. The match was interrupted by rain before the start and it started an hour late. We now look at the key events that took place during the match.

Delhi bowlers making use of the conditions

David Warner won the toss and chose to bowl. Jason Roy and Litton Das opened the innings for KKR. The duo was playing for the first time this season. Things didn’t go the way that KKR expected. Mukesh Kumar sent Das to the pavilion in just the 2nd over. Venkatesh Iyer lost his wicket to Nortje in the 4th over. In the last over of the powerplay, Ishant Sharma sent Rana to the pavilion, leaving KKR on 32 runs.

Middle-order struggles for KKR

Jason Roy kept his wicket and was scoring around a run per ball. Axar Patel joined the bowling attack and stopped them from creating a partnership. He took the wicket of Mandeep Singh and Rinku Singh. Sunil Narine was dismissed in the 12th over and Roy lost his wicket in the 15th over. KKR were 93/7 in 14.4 overs and Roy made 43 from 39 balls.

Russell’s power hitting took KKR to 127

Andre Russell took KKR’s charge after Roy’s dismissal. He scored 38 runs from 31 balls and took his side to a total of 127 runs. Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Jason Roy and Anukul Roy. Nortje added another wicket to his tally. DC bowlers performed well to stop KKR’s batting order.

DC’s decent start

David Warner was once again instrumental in DC’s start to the second innings. He opened along with impact sub, Prithvi Shaw. They made 38 runs in 4.3 overs before Shaw was dismissed for 13 runs. Warner took the charge and scored 57 runs.

KKR’s spin trio stops DC’s middle order

DC’s middle order struggled like KKR’s middle order. Varun Chakaravarthy led the spin attack along with Captain Nitish Rana and Anukul Roy. They dismissed the middle order cheaply. This allowed KKR to build some pressure and took DC to the last over. Axar and Pandey scored a few runs to take their side over the line.

Delhi Capitals finally registered their first win of the season. They almost lost the match but Warner’s crucial innings handed them their first points.
