Mumbai Indians registered their third win in a row after a 14 runs win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023. This match was played on the 15th anniversary of the biggest T20 league in the world. The match once again went to the final over. Arjun Tendulkar kept his nerve to take his side over the line. As MI won back-to-back matches, we look at the key events of the match.
Top-three contributed with runs
MI went to bat and made a decent start. They scored 41 runs in 4.3 overs before Rohit’s dismissal on the next ball. Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green then created a 46-run partnership. Kishan was dismissed on the first ball of the 12th over. Cameron Green went on to score 64 runs without getting dismissed.
Surya fails but Tilak and David take MI to 192 runs
Suryakumar Yadav once again failed to score runs. He was dismissed for 7 runs. However, Tilak Verma scored a quickfire 37 off 17 balls, while David scored 16 off 11 balls. These contributions took Mumbai Indians to 192 runs at the end of 20 overs.
SRH’s unsteady start
Harry Brook was sent to the pavilion in just the second over of the match by Jason Behrendorff. The Aussie pacer then took Tripathi’s wicket in the fourth over. SRH were 25-2 in 3.4 overs.
Chawla shows experience in the middle
Mayank Agarwal was present on the crease during these early dismissals. He then steadied Hyderabad’s charge along with Markram. Both created a 46 runs partnership. On came Cameron Green and dismissed Markram. Piyush Chawla then sent Abhishek Sharma early to the pavilion. Heinrich Klaasen then joined Agarwal in the middle to score a quickfire 36 runs off 16 balls. He was dismissed by Chawla.
Meredith and Arjun taking MI over the line
Riley Meredith was an impact sub and he went on to take 2 wickets in the match. Arjun Tendulkar bowled the first 2 overs and then he was given the responsibility to close the game. The 23-year-old went on to take a wicket in the fifth ball and ended SRH’s innings with 178 runs.
This victory takes MI to 6th in the league table with 3 wins. SRH remain 9th with 2 wins in 3 games.
